  1. Popping…

    August 19, 2011 by brooke

We went to the OB today for our 16 weeks appointment (we are 16 weeks + 5 days today).  It was short and sweet.  Got to hear the heart beat by doppler, still awesome even though we can hear it whenever we want at home now!  And I’m measuring about 17 weeks, so that’s about right.  I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up with a huge baby (Sean is 6′ 5″ tall!).  I had more blood taken today – seems like they do it every time… actually I think they have drawn blood each time I’ve been there so far!  Anyway, today’s blood was for the AFP (Alpha-fetal protein) test.

My Dr. explained it this way:  it used to be used to detect Down’s Syndrome (if it was too low, that indicated DS – possibly).  I’ve already had negative tests for that.  Now, they look for elevated AFP levels which can be an indicator for potential fetal growth restriction (probably not something we’ll have to worry about!), placental problems, or pre-eclampsia.  The other big thing an elevated AFP can signify is neural tube defects.  That would mean problems like Spina Bifida, a leak of spinal fluid into the brain, or basically other openings that shouldn’t be open.  An elevated AFP is also present in multiple pregnancies, but we only have one in there – trust me!  Dr. said the results would be back in about a week.  And of course, with everything else, even if it’s elevated it doesn’t mean something’s wrong.  It just means we would get followed more closely.

Anyway, the big news from today is that I think I’ve finally ‘popped’!  It might just be what I’m wearing today or the fact that I’ve been eating more this week, but I can definitely see a difference in my tummy region today 🙂  Of course, I still don’t look pregnant… now I just look slightly fat!  Oh-well, I know what it is and that’s all that matters to me.  As of today I’ve gained 3.2 pounds – pretty good and right on track.  Ok, more on Sunday 🙂  Just felt like sharing all that!  Have a great weekend!!
